A tense afternoon at the Kigali Pelé Stadium saw Vipers SC snatch a late 1-0 victory over Gor Mahia in their CECAFA Kagame Cup Group A encounter, taking a massive step toward the automatic semifinals stage slot.
Gor Head Coach Charles Akonnor made nine changes to the squad that beat APR 5-0, with stand-in skipper Mike Kibwage and his central defense partner Frank Odhiambo being the only players retained.
While new signings Humphrey Katasi and Ebenezer Ocran made their first starts in green. Vipers, on their side, made six changes to the team that beat Garde Republicaine 3-0 at the Amahoro Stadium.

The first half proved to be an uneventful affair, largely starved of clear-cut opportunities, aside from a yellow card issued to Gor Mahia right-back Paul Ochuoga, leaving the match to proceed to the interval with the deadlock unbroken.
Hoping to spark an opening after the restart, both teams emerged with greater urgency in the second half. The first shot on target finally came five minutes after the restart, but Ebenezer Adukwaw’s long-range effort was ultimately too weak to trouble Vipers goalkeeper Mbaba Loyce.
The Venoms responded dangerously four minutes later when Faruk Miya was released on the turn by Hillary Mukundane, but his quick shot flew just wide of the right post.
Desperate to find a breakthrough, both managers turned to their benches simultaneously with a flurry of tactical switches.
Gor Mahia executed a quadruple substitution, introducing Shariff Musa, Samuel Kapen, Lesley Otieno, and Paul Okoth for Ebenezer Adukwaw, George Amonno, Ben Stanley Omondi, and Hansel Ochieng’.
Vipers countered with a triple substitution of their own, throwing on Odil Chukwuma, Gusto Mulongo, and Arafat Kizza in place of Milton Karisa, Yunus Ssentamu, and Marvin Joseph.
Shortly after the tactical shakeup, Mukundane attempted an ambitious long-range strike for the Ugandan side, but it lacked the necessary direction.
Just when the match seemed destined for a stalemate, the tactical changes paid off in injury time. In the 92nd minute, substitute Odil Chukwuma set up fellow substitute Gusto Mulongo, who rose to power home a dramatic stoppage-time header past Humphrey Katasi to seal a second consecutive win for the Venoms.
A single point in their final match against APR will now be enough to secure top spot in Group A and a place in the semi-finals.
